In 1839, a group of enslaved Africans aboard the Spanish ship La Amistad stage a successful revolt on the high seas. They are eventually captured off the coast of America and put on trial for murder. The case becomes a landmark legal battle that reaches the Supreme Court, centering on whether they are property or free men, and igniting the debate over slavery in the United States.
