A young orphan boy endures a miserable childhood in a workhouse and is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes to London, where he is taken in by a group of young pickpockets led by the cunning Fagin. His innocent nature is tested in the gritty underworld, and he catches the attention of both a dangerous criminal and a kind-hearted benefactor.
