Based on the legend, the story is set in Sleepy Hollow, a valley gripped by fear of a spectral Hessian soldier who rides at night, headless. A superstitious schoolteacher from the city arrives and finds himself competing for the affection of a beautiful local girl with a rugged, heroic rival. The schoolteacher's vivid imagination and fear make him an easy target for the bromides of the local ghost story and the tricks of his rival.
