A common British soldier named Alf discovers that one of the buttons on his uniform is magically made from brass originally belonging to a ring of Aladdin's lamp. Upon polishing it, he inadvertently summons a powerful but comically incompetent djinn. The genie is obliged to grant him wishes, but his magic is erratic and literal-minded. Alf's attempts to use this power to improve his life, win the girl he loves, and avoid trouble in the army result in increasingly chaotic and hilarious supernatural mishaps.
