In post-World War II Leningrad, two young women, Iya and Masha, struggle to rebuild their lives amidst the ruins. Iya, nicknamed "Beanpole" for her height, works as a nurse in a hospital for wounded soldiers. She suffers from PTSD, causing her to have debilitating seizures. Masha, determined to find meaning after losing her family, returns from the front lines and becomes fixated on the idea of having a child. Their intense, co-dependent relationship is tested by Masha's overwhelming desire and the harsh realities of their existence in a city grappling with trauma.
