In the early 20th century, a Russian army explorer is surveying the harsh Siberian wilderness. He meets and hires Dersu Uzala, an elderly nomadic hunter, to be his guide. The two men, from completely different worlds, form a deep and respectful friendship as Dersu's profound wisdom and unique relationship with nature repeatedly saves the expedition from disaster. The film is a meditation on civilization's clash with the natural world.
