A writer and his photographer girlfriend embark on a cross-country road trip to research a book about serial killers. To share costs, they pick up a charismatic but volatile hitchhiker and his childlike girlfriend. The couple soon realizes their companions are far more dangerous than the historical murderers they are studying. Their academic journey becomes a terrifying real-life nightmare as they are drawn into the hitchhiker's increasingly violent world.
