Hester Collyer is the wife of a wealthy, older judge but feels emotionally stifled in her comfortable life. She embarks on a passionate and all-consuming affair with Freddie, a charismatic but unstable former Royal Air Force pilot. Leaving her husband, she moves in with Freddie, but their relationship is marked by intense highs and devastating lows. Hester is caught between the security of a respectable life and the reckless, painful desire of a love that threatens to destroy her, leading her to a state of profound despair.
