In Renaissance Venice, a young nobleman named Bassanio seeks to borrow money from his friend, the merchant Antonio, to woo a wealthy heiress. Antonio’s wealth is tied up at sea, so he is forced to secure a loan from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender whom he has publicly scorned. Shylock agrees to a loan with a chilling condition: if the debt is not repaid, he will be entitled to a pound of Antonio’s flesh.
