A fraudulent spiritualist preys on the wealthy and grieving citizens of a city, using clever tricks and psychological manipulation to con them out of their money. He establishes a lucrative scheme by pretending to communicate with the dead. His successful operation is thrown into jeopardy when he encounters a true believer whose faith challenges his own cynicism, and when real emotions begin to complicate his carefully constructed illusions.
