The story follows a tough, unrefined oil field worker—a "roughneck"—who labors under the grueling sun. His life of physical toil and simple pleasures is complicated when he becomes involved with a woman from a more educated or sophisticated background. Their class differences and contrasting worldviews create a central tension, as he must navigate unfamiliar social territory and confront his own insecurities to prove his worth.
