See the most agreed on films →Set in the remote American West at the turn of the 20th century, this is the story of a solitary laborer who spends his life building railways through the wilderness. Living in extreme isolation, his existence is marked by fleeting encounters with the modern world and profound, almost mythical, experiences with the untamed landscape. The narrative captures the quiet epic of his life, exploring themes of man versus nature, the price of progress, and the haunting memories of a lost love and a family that could have been.
