See the most agreed on films →A compassionate magistrate runs a remote outpost of an unnamed Empire, maintaining a fragile peace with the indigenous "barbarian" tribes. His life of routine is shattered by the arrival of a ruthless colonel from the Empire's secret police, who believes a rebellion is brewing. The colonel's brutal interrogation methods horrify the magistrate, who begins to question the morality of the Empire he serves. After showing kindness to a barbarian woman who was tortured, he finds himself accused of treason, becoming a victim of the very system he once upheld.
