Six-year-old Maisie is caught in the middle of a bitter and selfish custody battle between her aging rock star mother and her art-dealer father. As her parents become increasingly preoccupied with their new partners and their own lives, Maisie is often treated as an afterthought or a pawn. The story is told entirely from her perspective, observing the adults' irresponsible behavior and finding solace in the kindness of her parents' new partners, who become the most stable and caring figures in her tumultuous young life.
